Adding a Single Topic Discussion Board
Discussion boards are a great way to get students to think critically about your content, to assess their understanding, and to practice written expression. This tutorial will show you how to create a Single Topic Discussion Board.
First, navigate to the learning module where you would like to add the discussion board, and click Add.
A new window will pop up, giving you a choice between Activities and Resources. For a discussion board, you will choose Activities.
A window will open with all of the Activity options. Click Discussion Board and then click Add.
When the Discussion Board Window opens, name your discussion, and, if you have defined grading periods, choose a grading period. The grading period box will not be visible if you have not defined grading periods.
Decide whether you would like the discussion board to be visible or hidden for students at this time, whether to highlight it, and whether to display the instructions. You can change these settings at anytime.
Add your instructions for the discussion.
Next, change the discussion type to Single Topic Discussion Board, which means all replies will be underneath this main topic. Click the Copy to other Courses button if you would like to add this discussion to another class, and then click save and return to course.
There is an Advanced Options button on this page. While there are some nice advanced options, most instructors will not need to utilize these. To learn more, please see our advanced options tutorials.
Click Save and Return to Course.
You should now see your discussion board in your course.
You can click on the settings icon on the right side of the page to change the settings, move the discussion board to the right or left, hide it, duplicate, it or delete it.
Simply click on the Discussion Board to view and reply to student posts.
Keep in mind that you may need to refresh your screen to see the most recent posts. Click Reply to respond. You can also Edit or Delete your students' posts if needed.
If you like, you can change the way the posts are displayed by using the drop down menu in the top right corner of the panel.
