You can add grading periods at any time, though it is best to do so when you first create courses. To add them later, open your course and then click on the settings icon in the top right corner.
This will open the settings panel. Click on Edit Course Settings.
Then, click on the second to last tab labeled Settings.
Scroll down to the course deadlines section and click Add grading period to add the dates for each grading period.
Click Save changes to return to your course. You will now see your grading periods appear in your gradebook and whenever you add an activity you will be required to choose the grading period.
Please note that existing activities that require grading will not automatically be pulled into your new grading periods. You will need to add them. Please visit our article on adding existing activities to a grading period to learn the best way to add them.
